There's no black and white here, just a rich, delicious, cool, comforting, wallowing, deep brown.

Continual Amazement

Today is the day that we all thought Peter would be born-- the due date was Sept 2, and we figured most first babies are a little late, and wouldn't a Heerens descendant love to be born into a good pun? ("Labor Day" wasn't invented to honor women pushing out kids, though maybe it should be). Instead, it's Peter's 17th day of life and I'm in constant amazement at where we are now compared to 3 weeks ago.

Peter is doing well, but still a skinny guy... so we're fattening him up as best we can. It does help that GrandNan and Grandpa Ralph are here for 2 weeks. Peter has not needed to exert any excess calories in crying or otherwise expressing his needs, as he now has 2 devoted servants at his disposal (hint: they are not his parents). :)

We've been having entirely too much fun with him during our first weeks as family... perhaps the photos (and video!) will explain.

I know we're past pregnancy picture time, but I just can't resist-- this was Peter's last hike in utero, and we made him start out as a tree hugger. :) We went to Dinosaur, CO-- a very nifty park!

Peter and his Grandmas in the hospital-- GrandNan Heerens-Knudson at top, and Grandma Tennessen at bottom.

The boy now. I still can't get over those eyes.

"The Magic Hold" really works! We think he looks like cousin Cameron in this shot.

Not much bigger than Jason's foot.

I think this is the best picture we've taken so far. We brought the champagne from France last September. The label says "Do not Drink, for Fetus-Free Laura." The champagne was every bit as good as I hoped. Peter was non-plussed.

I think that Peter is close in mouth-opening skills.

Taking a walk... GrandNan is acting as a human pacifier. They kept this up for 2 blocks.

This is the crowning glory of Peter's nursery-- a VIKING SHIP CRADLE built by Grandpa Ralph. It is 6 feet by 3 feet by 4 feet and every bit as amazing as it looks. The shields on the sides are designed by uncle Nick and painted by GrandNan. A true family effort. We look forward to its evolving use from a cute baby accessory, to a toychest, to a vessel to imaginary lands unknown, to perhaps a trial as a real boat (Jason swears we will never move near water).

This is the promised inane video of Peter... he's just having hiccups, but we think it's the best video we've ever seen.

Except for this video-- this is Grandpa Ralph singing "Busterflies" to Peter. "Busterflies" is the song that he wrote for Peter when Peter was still in utero.

So that's the news from Salt Lake for now. I'll do a better-written post later, but I wanted to get these pictures and video out into the world for Peter's adoring fans.

Speaking of adoring fans, Peter has received an amazing number of incredible gifts-- thank you all! Thank you notes are coming a little later due to all the distraction around here, but please know that we really appreciate all the cuteness sent our way.
